Brewhouse Bias – PAY YOUR COACHES!!!

I understand Ball State will never be a football/basketball powerhouse. But, after watching my alma mater accomplish a 12 – 0 season under head coach Brady Hoke and then watch his contract negotiation (or lack thereof) get played out publicly, I knew we were destined for what always happens in these situations. We have a great coach, great season and we can’t hang onto them. Don’t get me wrong, if I were Brady, I would have run for the beaches and beautiful weather of San Diego, as well. I don’t blame the coaches. In fact, I think this Midwesterner would have preferred to stay in town, if Ball State could have at least matched his other offers.

I’m not an agent, I’m not an administrator, so I’m not going to profess to know the goings on behind the scenes in negotiations like this. But, I am a business man. And, I do know that football is one, if not the only, revenue generating sport for a college. I also know, as a boy who grew up in Muncie and have gone to Cardinal games throughout my life, that I haven’t seen Scheuman Stadium as consistently full or near sellout, as it was when the Cardinals were on their win streak. Fair weather fans or not, wins put asses in the seats. Paying “asses,” even. So, as a business man, my outside, unprofessional, biased opinion is that a good coach is worth that bigger salary.

Don’t get me started on Ball State Basketball…
