Respect The Yankees Chamionship? Not So Much…

Congratulations to the New York Yankees on your 27th World Championship. You bought yourself another one.

I know this argument has been made time and time again, but it’s very hard to respect a win of this magnitude with the state of baseball currently. With that being said, obviously it’s not the Yankees fault that they are allowed to pay whatever they want for whoever they want. It’s not their fault that there is no salary cap. It’s not their fault that they can buy any player because there is no rule against it.  I can give props to them for winning and say congratulations, but it’s very hard to respect how it was done.

Maybe I’m just a bitter fan because my team finished at the botom of their division this year. My team hovers around the middle of the pack as far as payroll goes. Again, Yankess fault? No. The Yankees payroll this season was just over $201,000,000. That’s $65,000,000 more than the next closest team, the New York Mets. That’s  far more than their World Series opponent the Phillies and their $113,000,000 payroll. Yankess Fault? No.

This isn’t an article bashing the Yankees talent or claiming they got lucky. Clearly they didnt. They had the best players in baseball and they won it fair and square. It’s just hard to respect the way it was done. This is why the Yankees probably have more haters than fans. Is it jealousy? Maybe, but as Amercians and the way most Americans are struggling in today’s economic environment, its far easier to root for a team like the Florida Marlins, Minnesota Twins or the Tampa Bay Rays. The Marlins paid it’s entire team this year with $36,000,000. That pays for A-Rod and half of Texeira. Yankees fault? No.

Outside of New York, it’s going to be hard to find anybody who is ecstatic over the Yankees win. For me, it was a “good job, but I don’t really care enough to watch the celebration,” situation. I watched every minute of the Phillies win last year. It seemed more pure. It would have been even better to see the Rays win last year with the second lowest payroll in baseball at that time. Just the fact that they got there was a better story than the Yankees actually winning it this year.

Maybe I’m a sap and care more about the game than the money involved. I’ll never be a Yankee fan so long as they can spend at their own free will. I can congratulate them all day long and say good job, but I can’t respect it because of the way it was done. Nothing makes me happier than to see a team with a $200,000,000 payroll lose. They hadn’t won a championship in the previous eight seasons. I guess money doesnt buy everything.

Go Tribe.

  • I get the angst about the Yankees "paying" for a championship. But still, keep in mind – they had to win 3 playoff series against other pro players. Not respecting that they earned the championship is not only not respecting the Yankees, but it's also not respecting all of their opponents. That's not fair.

  • I don't think saying one team is better than the other is disrepecting other teams. Yes they are pro players, but can you say the Nationals are on the same level as the Yankess just because they are professionals? No, I did say good job in the post, and congrats. My argumeent is that it's hard to respect it because with a 200 million dollar payroll they should win. The fact that they dont every year does show respect for other teams. I respect other teams more for that reason.

  • I don't understand why this is still an argument. What you are really angry about is the lack of salary cap in the MLB. This is like saying that you are mad at Michael Jackson because he had a good voice and he USED IT. The Yankees have money so they are USING IT. If you wanna complain about something, complain to Bud Selig. The "Yankees buying their championship" argument is over.

  • I advise you to read the post again where it states several times that it is not the yankees fault that there isn't a salary cap. The point of the post is that it's hard to respect the championship when they spent far more money than everyone else. They should win every year. Read the articles before you reply. I didn't realize you were the commissioner of 23/7. Apparently "dad" says this argument is over even though "dad" doesn't understand the post.
