Brewhouse Bias – The Dreaded BCS Ranking System

OK, I get tradition (Rose Bowl: Big 10 vs. Pac 10). I get capitalism. I understand that the current Bowl System would be nearly impossible to unravel with colleges getting paid to play, TV networks getting paid from advertisers and the millions of dollars that hosting cities receive from hotel, dining and merchandise spending. I understand the argument, “It just makes every Saturday’s game more important. That’s our playoff system.” And, I don’t really even [...]

Brewhouse Bias – MLB Can of Worms

Last week I started to get into a Facebook wrestling match of words with a die-hard baseball enthusiast. I opened the can of worms, I just let everyone else start doing the fishing. My distaste for the sport probably arises from baseball’s traditionalists and their inability to change with the times, or too little, always too late. Most of this can be seen or attributed the TV ratings. Especially when compared to the ratings of [...]

So Long Charlie

Charlie Weis loves cake, like Notre Dame loves football.  Wait?  Is that how the saying goes?  I believe so.  But the real question at hand is, will the Notre Dame faithful allow the big man to finish this season unscathed and/or come back for another?  When Charlie Weis came to the Fighting Irish, the Notre Dame loyal thought he was a “God-send” after Ty Willingham’s reign with a 21-16 record over three seasons.  Above .500, [...]

Respect The Yankees Chamionship? Not So Much…

Congratulations to the New York Yankees on your 27th World Championship. You bought yourself another one. I know this argument has been made time and time again, but it’s very hard to respect a win of this magnitude with the state of baseball currently. With that being said, obviously it’s not the Yankees fault that they are allowed to pay whatever they want for whoever they want. It’s not their fault that there is no [...]

ESPN 30 for 30: Without Bias

Last night, ESPN aired another feature in its 30 for 30 series.  This one, titled Without Bias, was a look back at the 1986 death of Len Bias just days after the NBA Draft.  Bias was a superstar whose cocaine-related death came as a shock to the world of sports. To me, the film missed its mark.  Most sports fans are at least aware, to some degree, of the story of Len Bias.  There was [...]

Joe – Get It Together

I am a die-hard Yankee fan through and through.  With that being said, I am not the type of fan who cannot recognize when their team needs to work out a few “kinks,” aka Patriots fans, or a person who will ask for the manager to be burned on the stake for making a few mistakes, aka all Chicago fans.  As a former coach and player myself, I cannot fathom why Yankee pitchers are continuing [...]

How Not To Run a Franchise: Cleveland Edition

As you’ve probably already heard, George Kokinis is out as GM of the Browns.  While it isn’t terribly surprising that the cuts have already started in Cleveland, it still brings up an interesting discussion – is there a team in Pro Sports that has mismanaged itself more than the Cleveland Browns in the last year? Let’s start with Kokinis.  This is the first time I’ve ever heard of a team hiring its coach, and then [...]
