On October 14, 2015, in the seventh inning of a winner-take-all Game 5 of the American League Division Series at Rogers Centre, Toronto Blue Jays slugger José Bautista crushed a three-run home run off Texas Rangers reliever Sam Dyson and flung his bat into the air — the "bat flip," one of the most iconic and divisive moments in modern baseball. The Blue Jays won 6-3. A decade earlier, Bautista had been baseball's ultimate castoff: taken from Pittsburgh in the 2004 Rule 5 draft, he became the only player ever to appear on five major-league rosters in a single season, then spent five more years as a replaceable spare part. Nearing 29, he remade his swing with Blue Jays coaches Dwayne Murphy and Cito Gaston, learning to start earlier — and in 2010 hit a major-league-best 54 home runs, the most by a man who had never topped 16. He became a six-time All-Star and retired a Blue Jay in 2018.
