2026-09-16Pete Alonso receives emotional ovations in first Citi Field return as an Oriole
Alonso, the Mets' all-time home run leader who left in free agency to sign with Baltimore, tipped his cap through pregame ovations and a tribute video Sept. 14 in front of 35,800 fans; Baltimore won 2-1. The next night Baltimore beat New York 7-5 in extras, with Coby Mayo driving in three. Francisco Lindor and Jonah Tong both offered on-record tributes to Alonso.
Devin Williams and Cionel Pérez progress toward late-season returns
Williams (right shoulder strain since Aug. 10) threw a bullpen session Sept. 14 and could be activated within days of his next one. Pérez (left forearm strain) advanced his rehab assignment to Triple-A Syracuse Sept. 15.
Binghamton eliminated from the playoffs as Double-A season ends; Syracuse still alive
Binghamton finished 61-76 and was eliminated after going 1-4 in its final series. Syracuse sits a half-game behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the final International League playoff spot with six games left; top hitter MJ Melendez carries a .979 OPS through 70 Triple-A games.
Fans chant "Fire Stearns" during Alonso's emotional return
Amid Alonso's homecoming, Mets fans chanted for the ouster of president of baseball operations David Stearns as New York heads to a second straight playoff miss. Owner Steve Cohen said on the record Aug. 19 that the front office "took too much risk" in the offseason but reiterated his commitment to Stearns for 2027, specifically citing Marcus Semien, Jorge Polanco and Devin Williams among additions who struggled or got hurt. Stearns has not commented on the chants specifically.
